Preparing for the 2011-12 Season

Commentary by Ron Simpson

The 2011-2012 season is approaching and coaches like myself are preparing for the season. As I prepare for the season, I think about practices, plays, and the type of players I will have on the court. Due to the short of amount of practice time I’m allotted, our practices are normally organized for 20 minutes of skill work and the rest is executing defensive schemes and offensive work. Very rarely do I have enough practice time for individual work for my players.  As Coaches, we expect our players to work on individual skills during the off season and be ready to “rock” on the first day of practice.  When I played at Rider University, we all went into our first practice in excellent game shape and each year our basketball skills improved due to our off season programs. This is crucial for a successful basketball program.

Now we are in the preseason. What are you doing now? Open gyms for your teams? Pick up basketball at your local gym or outdoor courts(players today refuse to play pickup)? AAU? Hopefully you are playing and training. Granted, I know many basketball players are playing a fall sport and I get that. Expect to be behind in many aspects of your game but be competitive and catch up with the rest of your squad.

Anyway, good luck this season and hope to see you soon.

Fall Training

September 3rd, 2011 posted by Ron

The summer of 2011 was a great season for Post Players Basketball!    Players such as 5’11 Dana Jeter (Starting Soph. for William Paterson College), 6’4 Christa Evans ( Freshman Rutgers) 5’11 Shannon Evans (Sr. Jackson), 6’5 Sr. Steve Noworyta(Holy Cross High School), 6’9 Desmond Hubert (New Egypt/North Carolina), 5’11 Samantha Widman(Robbinsville 8th grader) , Ryan/Parker Omslaer(6’2 7th grade twins, Jackson), Talyor Batalla(5’10 Soph Lacey HS), and Kevin Walsh (5’11 9th grader SteinertHS) and many more promising post players trained with Post Players this summer.

2011 Summer thoughts

This summer Post Players offered 1 on 1 instruction and small groups training(3-7 players).  This was a huge success for the players and parents because we worked on skills that they would not have received in larger groups.  The concept of 1 on 1 and small groups training is the way to go for many players. Sessions that include 20-30 players with 1 or 2 trainers is counter productive for many players because most basketball trainers don’t know the players or have the opportunity to work on the players skills.

Are Post Players Getting Bigger and Stronger?

February 16th, 2011 posted by Ron

Post Players at many high school levels are sometimes 5’7 or 5’8 on the girls levels. On the boys levels post players are 6’3 or 6’4. To play the post you really don’t have to be 7 feet tall! Its makes a coaches life easier if they have this size but not all 7 footers are dominating….Can’t teach height..
